Wow... I really wanted to like this book, but the writing was just... not good. (And that's a generous understatement).

The dialogue writing in this story is some of the worst I've ever seen. Mostly because the author's attempts at writing slang is pretty abysmal... as in, she leaves out key words in sentences to the point where you don't know what the character is saying. Now, I've read books where slang/ shortened sentences is done well & it works, but that is not the case with this book. The most flagrant example that comes to mind (because it happens repeatedly) was her emission of "if" in all dialogue... so every time a character says a hypothetical scenario, it sounds like they're saying something that actually happened... I can't tell you how many times I had to go back and re-read dialogue because it didn't make sense, only to realize that the event (or whatever) was hypothetical or hadn't happened.

Secondly, my God, the main character was an airhead. There were a handful of times where her comments or thoughts were actually pretty funny, but for the most part her humor and personality were VERY juvenile and mind-numbingly stupid. The way she handled the love triangle (or should I say square?) was immature and, I repeat, STUPID. It was as if she couldn't help herself from encouraging the other 2 guys, even though she was supposedly head over heels in love with Hawk. I just found myself having very little patience for her actions throughout most of the book. And I also don't think I've ever thought to myself, "I can't believe I'm still reading about this idiot" so many times throughout a book, either.

That said, despite the annoyances above, the story did grab me enough to want to finish it. I really liked Hawk (and actually I liked Mitch and Tack, too), and I wanted to see how the story ended. I suppose I'm glad I finished it, but I don't know if I'll read another by this author.

Mystery Man The Dream Man Series Book 1 edition by Kristen Ashley Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews

I have two reviews. 1) The book review 2) the audio review.

1) The book was about a 3.5 star for me. I loved Gwen! She was great and I could relate to her on a lot of levels until the end. The reason this book didn't get higher stars is Gwen was a strong woman that stood up for herself and owned her sh*t. She got out of a bad situation and made some poor decisions but she owned them. BUTTTT I don't like the guilt trip that Hawk gave her or his mother gave her. When you get to that part you will understand what I am saying. Gwen had gone through some life changing events and went through some really hard times that most people would break down and not be able to function but Gwen powered through and Hawk was horrible to her in my opinion. I understand why he did but he never really apologizes for his actions. He just explains why he did what he did but that doesn't make it okay. There are moments that I really like Hawk and he is really a good guy but no one really acknowledged her feelings or the tragic events she went through. I became very frustrated with the author that Gwen's feelings was put aside and Hawk's feelings, needs and wants were what mattered. Over all the book moved nicely and I really loved the writing and how the story flowed. There were just parts and outcomes that I didn't agree with. The author has great secondary characters and I love that. I like when there are more characters than just the couple.

2) The audio was amazing....5 stars!!! OMG if you aren't an audio person but have always wanted to try one this is the book you should get. There isn't much else to say other than it was amazing. I wish she narrated all the books I listened to.
I complain too much.... I had started complaining about the books I read where this super sexy guy would want this plain Jane because he fell in love with her "inner beauty." I started saying I wanted to read a book about a pretty girl for a change. Well this girl must have been stinkin beautiful since EVERYONE wanted her. Yet her brain wasn't so great. She was such a ditz and would overlook anything for a good looking guy. I did not appreciate that character quality in the least.

The love between the two main characters was--surface level. I mean, how much of a relationship can I really expect when the premise is of strangers?

All that aside- it was well written. And man is this author funny. I enjoy laughing and this book made me laugh several times. If you want a light read with little commitment- try this one. It was fun.
I just wasted some good hours of my life on this book. The heroine could not find herself out of an unlocked room even if there was a blinking exit sign. She was a dimwit. She rated people on there looks by a point scale which drove me crazy. It was impossible for her to make a decision or form a sentence. There was not a real connection between the H/h. The book just drug on. If you value your time skip this book.
