RUNNING had me up till the wee hours of the morning! And, when I was not reading it, I was thinking about the caracters. Two women running for president, One of them has a 30 year old secret that's come back to haunt her. To top things off, there's drug addict on a downward spiral and some slimy characters Mixed in for good measure. This book book is at times funny, heartbreaking, and suspenseful. Ms Fitzgerald writes with an amazing wit and honesty. I also recommend her short story, LOOKING FOR LANCE. It's a great quick read that will have you thinking for a while -) Enjoy!
WOW! I picked this book up and I could not put it down. (However, I did have to sleep and eat) Read the synopsis for the plot summary. The characters were well defined. Catherine is a likeable heroine, Zane an evil enemy. Talk about a campaign manager from Hell. You learn really early just who was the enemy in this book. Hint it was not her opponent in the race for the presidency. This book had it all---blackmail, drugs, mystery, murder, kidnapping.
Just what was Catherine's secret? And just who is trying to blackmail her? She is the Vice President of the United States, and is running for president.
I read the kindle version of this book. And as an added bonus it was free. Watch out Patterson and Grisham . Patrice Fitzgerald is headed for the best sellers list. .
Liked the characters. The main character is running for president and has to deal with a scandal from her past, which is one of those things that really shouldn't be a scandal at all, but people care about stupid stuff when it comes to politics. Unfortunately this plot point was also a little predictable for me, as I saw it coming very early in the book. I did like the concept and the characters.
This was a fantastical look at what if....each party chose a woman to run for President of the United States. The focus was on how a mother weighs the pull of duty to office over duty to a child.
The story flowed well, mostly told from one character's point of view. More on the inner thoughts of a candidate than political strategy.
Far fetched storyline to bring mother and daughter back together.
Read the book for the fun of imagining one day when a person's experience and knowledgeable understanding of the political and military could lead to a campaign where the only choice for POTUS is a woman.
What kind of women would they be like? A Hillary Clinton vs Michelle Bachman?
What would they need to do to demonstrate true leadership and rise above the males claiming the spot?

A woman running for the highest office in the land, a gut wrenching decision from her past, a devastating betrayal all culminating in a action packed intense drama makes RUNNING a must read. (and I believe a very good story line for a Hollywood blockbuster film....Meryl as Catherine maybe?)
I am thrilled that this is Ms. Fitzgerald's first novel as it gives me hope of many more days lost in her wonderful imagination.
My initial impression was that the story would primarily deal with election issues, campaigning and politics in general. While the story did, in fact, contain many of those elements, it developed into a far more soul searching analysis of personal tragedy and historical decisions that came home to roost. The "personal angst" of which I speak is the thrust of the story, played out amidst the political world and a candidate who did not have the luxury most of us do of shielding our indiscretions from public view. In some respects Running becomes an expose on how humans should (or should not) deal with public disclosure of human weakness. In that regard, the story is compelling.
I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style, the unique way in which the author kept the story moving, introducing new characters when necessary, and changing our view of some of the key players. This is a fine debut novel and I expect more from this new author. I highly recommend Running.
